Talking Points (courtesy of Holly Armstrong)

  • Love is in the air – and on our land!
  • The values of Coloradans are buried deep in our land and our history. The Colorado oil and Gas Conservation Commission last year recognized this when it developed new rules to better protect our fish and wildlife.
  • The best decisions are based on data and trends and wildlife is no exception. The COGCC members took into account data and personal testimony from Coloradans across the state, including experts who have observed wildlife and fish populations for decades.
  • The maps presented by Rocky Mountain Wild show in detail the changes that recently took effect in our state.
  • The Colorado Oil and Gas Conservation Commission and its staff spent hundreds of hours and listened to seemingly endless testimony to forge the best path forward to better protect fish and wildlife in our state. They recognized that how wildlife moves and migrates in Colorado is critical to protect our economy and our way of life.
  • Here in Colorado, we take pride in our way of life and our robust economy. We understand that the economy is driven by the people who live here. It is driven by our history, our experiences and our sense of community. It is driven by the way of life that brings thousands here every year to live, work and play.
  • The new COGCC rules will protect critical wildlife habitat, such as riparian areas (narrow strips of land next to streams, rivers, lakes, ponds, and wetlands), big game migration corridors, and species-specific habitat from oil and gas.
  • Oil and gas development has put pressure on the natural habitats that wildlife depend upon and affects populations. We need to ensure that our wildlife populations thrive to support our rural communities and recreation tourism industry.
  • Colorado’s riparian areas make up just one-percent of our landscape, but support 80% of all wildlife species at some stage in their life cycle. They also protect our clean water supplies and shield against floods that pose a threat to our health and safety.
  • Colorado wildlife is critical to our state economy and to local communities across the state.
  • Any impact to Colorado wildlife is an impact to our economy and our way of life. Industry and wildlife can coexist and, when industry impacts critical habitat or migration corridors, those companies must be held accountable.
  • Those of us who hunt, fish and recreate in the state know how important it is to maintain our big game populations. Our local businesses and communities also know the impacts of healthy and robust recreational tourism.
  • Federal restrictions will push oil and gas development to state and private land. New rules in Colorado mean that we can continue to protect our fish and wildlife, our economy and our way of life.
