December (Fourth Quarter) 2026 Lease Sale

Scoping (posted 6/15/2025)

  • The Preliminary Parcel List for the Utah Bureau of Land Management’s proposed December (Q4) 2026 lease sale is now available. The comment period ends Thursday, July 16 2026. There is important information on how to comment on the Utah 2026 Fourth Quarter Oil and Gas Competitive Lease Sale ePlanning website. There is additional information in the Press Release and on the Utah Oil and Gas Lease Sales Web Page.
  • According to the press release and documents, the Utah Bureau of Land Management is proposing to offer 44 parcels / 74,664.33 acres. The parcels being proposed are in Carbon, Emery, Grand, San Juan, and Uintah Counties in the Moab, Price, Richfield, and Vernal Field Offices.
  • Rocky Mountain Wild has prepared a screen showing conflicts between the proposed parcels and important wildlife, wilderness and other resource values.
  • Wildlife and plant conflicts identified:
    • Habitat for greater sage-grouse (general habitat only)
    • Critical habitat and current species range for ESA threatened Mexican spotted owl (Strix occidentalis lucida).
    • Occurrences of ESA threatened Uinta Basin hookless cactus (Sclerocactus wetlandicus) including populations in the Pariette Wetlands Area of Critical Environmental Concern (ACEC).
    • Current species range for ESA endangered shrubby reed-mustard (Schoenocrambe suffrutescens)
    • Current species range for ESA threatened Ute ladies’-tresses (Spiranthes diluvialis)
    • Crucial winter and fawning habitat for mule deer
    • Crucial winter and calving habitat for elk
    • Crucial year-long and fawning habitat for pronghorn
  • Wildlands conflicts identified:
    • Big Flat Tops and Pariette Wetlands Areas of Critical Environment Concern (ACECs)
    • Lands identified as having wilderness characteristics by the Bureau of Land Management and by conservation organizations
    • Lands proposed for Wilderness Designation by the U.S. Congress in the Americas Red Rock Wilderness Act.
  • Overlaps with the human-powered recreation footprint identified by Outdoor Alliance
  • Note that all of the proposed parcels are in areas identified as having moderate or high potential for oil and gas development.

September 22, (Third Quarter) 2026 Lease Sale

  • The Sale Notice, Draft Environmental Assessment (EA), and Unsigned Finding of No Significant Impact (FONSI) for Utah Bureau of Land Management’s proposed September (Q3) 2026 lease sale is now available. The protest period ends Friday, August 21 2026.   • According to the press release and documents, Utah Bureau of Land Management is proposing offering 35 parcels / 34,654.77 acres. The parcels being proposed are in Emery, Grand, and Uintah Counties in the Moab and Vernal Field Offices.

  • Wildlife and plant conflicts identified:
    • Priority habitat for greater sage-grouse
    • Critical Habitat for Colorado pikeminnow and razorback sucker and current species range for bonytail, Colorado pikeminnow, and razorback sucker. All three species are listed as endangered under the Endangered Species Act (ESA).
    • Management area for ESA endangered black-footed ferret and white-tailed prairie dog areas.
    • Current species range for ESA threatened Mexican spotted owl
    • Current species range for ESA threatened Ute ladies’-tresses (Spiranthes diluvialis)
