For over 25 years, Rocky Mountain Wild has been fighting to protect wildlife and wild lands from damaging fossil fuels development. Through our Oil & Gas Watch program, we support a coalition of organizations across the Rocky Mountain West that fight inappropriate oil and gas development in those states. We have been directly involved in the deferral of over 2 million acres of public land from oil and gas development. Our work also led to successfully reforming oil and gas State and Federal oil and gas development regulations.
Unfortunately, the White House wasted no time attempting to undo the federal reforms to promote unfettered oil and gas development. Immediately after taking office, the president issued a series of energy-focused executive orders – including one declaring a “National Energy Emergency” and one “Unleashing American Energy.” Newly appointed Secretary of the Interior, Doug Burgum, issued a series of Secretarial Orders on February 3, signaling that that federal agencies are focusing on oil and gas development. Westerners strongly support conserving public lands rather than use them for oil and gas development. Congressional leaders are ignoring their constituents and proposing forcing the Bureau of Land Management to offer quarterly lease sales for more than 208 million acres of public lands and subsurface minerals (“Daines bill”) and reopening thousands of acres of federal land to drilling.
